All of a sudden Harley has excessive tear stains - Advise?

Harley is 9 mths old. He has been on Natural Balance Sweet Potato & Fish for the last four months and done very well. Never had a issue with tear staining.
In the last couple weeks started noticing a bit of staining on one side. Could also be the same on other side but hair under other eye is very dark so staining would not be visible. Have been applying diaper rash ointment regularly and also tried some suggestions I have seen here like soda & peroxide paste & gold bond powder but the staining is becoming darker and covering more area daily.
When we look at his eyes we don't see any obvious problem. No cherry eye or entropian. Also no stray eyelashes visible to us. The only thing that appears different on this eye is that the white part doesn't seem as "white" as his other eye. I plan on calling his vet tomorrow to schedule appointment to have a look at his eyes but would really appreciate any thoughts or advice.

My thoughts

I had Lola on that Sweet Potato and Fish and all was fine for a few weeks and then she started to tear more.. I took her off of it and put her on Orijen 6fish and I can already tell her tearing has stopped but I also took her off all low grade treats and human treats..

Thanks Ela1ne! After reading your thoughts

we have been thinking about the possibility of this being a allergy issue.
Food or formulation has not changed.
We had been giving him a few snacks of "people" food when this first started but quit doing that as soon as we saw an issue, and still it's gotten worse.

We do live in Michigan and unfortunately it has gotten cold here early and so furnaces have been recently started. This sounds like a good possibility. If so, is there anything we can do to alleviate or lessen the problem?

I do use scented candles regularly in my home but have done this since the first day he was brought home. Is it possible that even if he didn't have a allergy problem with them before he could develop one as he grows?

Other than these possibilities we can't think of anything that has changed with him in the last few weeks.

I really appreciate your taking the time to respond with your expertise and experience.

Thank You so much

Obviously an exam is first on the agenda

because sometimes those few errant lash hairs aren't readily visible, and a Shirmer Tear Test would tell you whether the eye is producing the normal amount of tears, or excessive amounts.

We often think "allergies" in the Springtime when everything is blooming, but its a lot less of a concern or common problem this time of year, however if its been quite cold and you have turned on the furnace, or been burning logs in the fireplace regularly, that too can be an irritant...and some have added a humidifier to their home if the furnace is on for 6mos of the year. If his diet hasn't changed, and the formulation of the food hasn't changed, its not likely the problem. Do you use scented candles or other types of room-air-fresheners? Those have been culprits of problem with some dogs who are very sensitive to this...same with carpet-freshener or similar products. Have you had your carpets professionally cleaned recently? I'm trying to review in my mind what items or actions have caused excessive tearing and eye irritation in other dogs here. happy.gif
