I need help with aggression in my bulldog . First off I am going to conceal our identity until I feel comfortable . We are new to bulldogs. we got our first bitch last May . She is a beautiful bitch now at 18 months and has 11 show points with a 5 point specialty major and 4 BOB . I hope to finish her this fall . She is a grand daughter of a HOF stud . We have tried just about everything we know of to correct this with her . She at times is the most loving creature . We love her very very much . But she will flake out at times . When this happens her eyes get really big and she growls . We have other dogs and they have never acted this way . She can be a very mean bitch at times . But the funny thing is she seems to know what she has done after she whacks out . Ten miniutes later she is a totally different back to being the normal loving bullie . I have gotten no help from the breeder other then the same emails he always sends back . He has been no help period . We are so attach to her I need to correct this and need help , suggestions !
Sometimes it will be her fighting with our other dogs . Or sometimes it will be my wife or me . She the bitch , is so confident she just at times tries to be the pack leader . We need some help to get her to totally submit . We are hoping this will go away because we just bred her last week . Our thinking is she will change when she has her puppies .
Any suggestions please .
Thank you
Has she ever bit you?
You need a good trainer/ behaviorist to come to your home and evaluate her.

What are her triggers? Does she go after YOU or....
does she go after an object you're holding, etc? Have you taken her to a trainer? Why did you get her at a year old (why did the breeder get rid of her)?
You can email me privately if you would like to.

she is really a sweet girl . There is something that " triggers" her that I can't figure out . And just to add we new and I was asking for help . Its not like she tries to bite people in public thats never been the case . she has always been GREAT in public .

adjustment
I think with more training she will be fine . She really is a good bitch . But like you said " triggers" we are new to the breed . I was asking for suggestions on correcting her . When we first got her she was kept in the kennel I treated her as a show dog and not knowing ant better I think I was wrong . I should have not done that .

Questions...???
Did the breeder MAKE YOU BREED her because she was sold to you on a breeding contract?
If not on a contract, where you pressured into doing this breeding?
You are raising issues now as if you know what you have done is wrong, so my assumption is that there was some pressure.
You do know that you could have this problem taken care of and know body would be the wiser...Your vet can abort the breeding today if you wanted it aborted.
It is unfortunate that you haven't been mentored by someone who has their head screwed on straight. HOF, Specialty Majors, Championships, those AWARDS are all meaningless when you have an unhealthy dog or an aggressive one.
A dog that is dying do to health issues or wants to kill people or animals do to an aggression issue is pretty real though...

Nature vs. Nurture
Since you didn't get her as a young pup, it would be hard to determine if your dogs aggression is inherited or is a result of a lack of training/early socialization. Because you don't know, I think it was a huge risk to breed her.
In either case, I strongly urge you to get help. You can start at apdt.com
Good luck

My Opinion
If the agression is inherited no trainer can help. Did you see both parents? I train dogs for a living and have run across a disease called Rage it is in bulldogs and what I have seen is the dog is perfectly fine and for no reason will just go off the eye does looks wild. This should be ruled out.
Temperament is the most important thing when considering breeding. This bitch from what you are saying is not sound in mind she may have been awarded big points but should never be put in a breeding program as her temperament will be handed down to her pups. I think the best thing is to have her spayed. Kim

I agree.....
You shouldn't have bred this bitch at all.... she should have been spayed and put in a home alone and under gone some Cesar Millan training.... and if that didn't correct her behavior so she could live a good life as a pet I would put her down.... I love my bullies but if any of them ever show any aggression to me or the other bullies and I can't correct it after one session of Cesar's method.... I would have no problem putting them down whether they were pointed or even championed..... I'm a vet tech and I don't tolerate aggression period.... in any dog....

most of what I would of said has already been said BUT
if your girl does take-under NO circumstances should she EVER be left alone with the pups.....she could attack them, eat them etc.....so for their safety please make sure they are monitored constantly when in her presence.

To those who understand no explanation is needed. To those who don't no explanation is possible.

I also wanted to add
Good luck. I hope and pray this aggression can be helped with behavior modification and training. It's worth a try but, it's going to take a lot of dedication and it still might not help your situation.
I agree that your breeders should have offered more help. Did you tell the owners of the sire you used for this breeding about your bitch's agression issues? If not, that is something you certainly should have disclosed.

So if I am doing my math correctly...
You got your bitch at 13 months of age. I am hesitant to say that your bitch has a genetic disposition to being aggressive. It could be something in her past and you aren't aware of the "triggers".
We just got a girl from a very wellknown breeder/judge, these people have been in bulldogs for 40+ years. Our girl was a year in June and we got her in August. She has had some issues with the rest of our pack. But this girl has spent her first year in a kennel, well cared for but not as a "pet".
I would say that in time you will know if this girl of yours has a trait that is inherited or if she just needs to be better adjusted. Good luck.

Re: Aggression
First and foremost temperament in our breed is most important! Breeding an aggressive bitch or even a dog should not be done. So many times breeders will not tell potential puppy buyers or stud dog owners that they have aggression in their lines. So the buck should stop with you. If your girl gets pregnant you should inform any potential puppy clients that there is a possibility of aggression. Being a HOF dog or winning Best of Breed & specialty major wins means nothing if they are aggressive. I don't care if they are the #1 dog in the country or a HOF dog I would NOT breed to it if there is aggression in the lines. The fact that the breeder has not helped or responded speaks volumes! Shame on them!!!

Jacinda is correct...
Temperament should be a major concern (IMO - probably the most important along with health)and it is passed genetically. Minimally, I would have had your girl evaluated prior to breeding, but what's done is done.
Contact a behaviorist/trainer ASAP. I would also ask the trainer for any tips they may have in dealing with pups (ie: socialization, development, etc). There's only so much that can be done after breeding, but occassionally, an experienced dog handler can cope. There are, unfortunately, some pups that just can't be helped.
Good luck.

I agree Jacinda
Breeding will only make the aggression worse. Temperament is genetic, and she will pass that temper onto her pups to some degree. Of course, u won't see that at 8 wks of age. Lottie

Having pups will not cure aggression, it will probably make her
More Agressive!
It sounds as if you are dealing with more than simple agression. It almost sounds as if she has rage syndrome. You need to have this dog examined by a behaviorist. I can't believe you would breed this bitch. The temperment of a bulldog is just as important as it's confirmation. In my opinion, you are asking for trouble by breeding this bitch. Did you ever once ask yourself what would happen if the puppies inherited this agression?
Being a good moral breeder means that sometimes you have to make the hard decisions and spay or neuter a lovely conformationally correct animal. Much more thought should go into breeding than how many points a dog has or how many champions are in their pedigree.
I find it curious that you decided to ask for help AFTER you bred the bitch.
